History over time

Around the village

Rio nell'Elba

Rio nell'Elba is one of the oldest countries on the island with origins in the Bronze Age, preserving numerous traces of its past and among these there are also marine archaeological finds.

Perched on a hill 170 meters above sea level, it is located on the eastern side of the Elba Island .

The area, famous for its iron mines dating back to the Etruscan age, was the island's mining center until the closure of the deposits.

The "Museum of the People of Rio" in the historic center of the town, houses several pieces from the numerous private collections, transferred to the Municipality on loan.

The old wash-houses with their brass mouths from the 1500s, the valley of the mills where once there were 22 fed by the Canali spring and the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, a reference point for international culture, deserve a careful visit.
